GIOVANNI GIROLAMO (HIERONYMUS) SBARALEA ST URBAIN, Ferdinand de: Italy, ca. 1710, Bronze, 36 mm Giovanni Girolamo (Hieronymus) Sbaralea (Sbaraglia)
(1641-1710) was Professor of Anatomy at the University of Bologna. A
competent anatomist and one of a long line of intellectuals connected with
the institution, for around forty years he had held the chair of medicine
and anatomy at the University of Bologna. He was one of the protagonists of
the famous anatomist, Marcello Malpighi. This antagonism was not only
scientific but also personal, as in 1659 the brother of Malpighi killed a
brother of Sbaralea. On June 8, 1710 Girolamo Sbaraglia died in Bologna at the
age of sixty-nine. This medal likely commemorates his death.
