CARDINAL GIACOMO DE ANGELIS ST. URBAIN, Ferdinand de: Lorraine, 1701, Bronze, 41 mm
Giacomo de Angelis (Jacques de St Marie, Cardinal
Sant’Angelo) (1610-1695) was born in the archdiocese Pisa in 1610 of a noble
family. He attended the University of Pisa where he received a doctorate in
utroque iure, both canon and civil law. In his early life he served
under Pope Innocent X and Pope Alexander VII. He was elected archbishop of
Urbino in 1660 and created cardinal in 1686. He died in 1695 and was buried
in Barga, near Garfagnana, archdiocese of Pisa. His tomb is in S. Maria in
Aracoeli, Rome. Jean Philippe, shown on the reverse, nephew of Giacomo de
Angelis, was Prior of Saint Etienne (St. Stephen).
