Charles de Lorraine (1364-1431) was the son of Jean I Duke of Lorraine and his wife Sophie von Württemberg. He succeeded his father in 1390 as Charles I (referred to as Charles II on the medal) Duke of Lorraine. In 1394, Charles married Margareta Pfalzgräfin (1376-1434), daughter of Ruprecht III Pfalzgraf bei Rhein King of Germany & his wife Elisabeth von Nürnberg (Hohenzollern).
