Charles Emmanuel III (1701 -1773), Duke of Savoy and King (Charles Emmanuel I) of Sardinia from 1730 to his death in 1773. He was the son of Victor Amadeus II, from whom he inherited the throne, and was succeeded by his son, Victor Amadeus III. A competent soldier-king, Charles Emmanuel gained territory by siding with France and Spain in the War of the Polish Succession and then by siding against Spain and with Austria in the War of the Austrian Succession.
