The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was a state that was created in 1801 by the merger of the Kingdoms of Great Britain and Ireland. (The Kingdom of Great Britain was itself formed in 1707 by a Union of the Kingdoms of Scotland and England). The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland ended upon Irish independence in 1922 when the Anglo-Irish Treaty created the Irish Free State, leaving the remaining territory as the present United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
